Speaker(s)
Pierre Friedlingstein, Ph.D., professor, chair in mathematical modelling of the climate system, department of mathematics and statistics, University of Exeter
Speaker bio(s)

The ongoing climate change is primarily driven by the increase in atmospheric greenhouse gases concentrations, with carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions being the major cause. In this seminar, Dr. Pierre Friedlingstein will first present the latest on the anthropogenic perturbation of the global carbon cycle. Then he will review the current knowledge on the dynamic of the coupled climate and carbon cycle system, the recent development of Earth System models allowing to quantify the future carbon dioxide emissions compatible with the limit global warming, and the implications on international climate policies.

Professor Pierre Friedlingstein, fellow of the Royal Society, is Chair in Mathematical Modelling of the Climate System at the University of Exeter. He has 30-years research experience in the fields of global carbon cycle, biogeochemical cycles and climate change. He coordinates the annual Global Carbon Budget of the Global Carbon Project, an effort that provides robust carbon cycle information to assist international climate policy such as the UNFCCC. He has been an author for the 4th and 5th assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He is member of the Joint Steering Committee of the World Climate Research Programme.
