Many of the most famous and common cases of laboratory misconduct involve the publishing of microscopic images that are not representative of the original data. However, among researchers utilizing microscopy in their research programs, much remains unclear regarding what actions would officially constitute misconduct and ways that misconduct can be avoided and identified. In this talk, image manipulation will be defined as it relates specifically to microscopy images, and tips to avoid image manipulation will be provided. Further, a discussion regarding why image manipulation may be so prevalent will lead to sharing some potential solutions and tools to help prevent cases of image manipulation and lead to more reproducible and accurately reported imaging data.
