He is also the editor-in-chief of The Transmitter, a publication for neuroscientists, and a Distinguished Journalist In Residence at New York University’s Carter Journalism Institute, where he teaches medical journalism in the Science, Health, and Environmental Reporting Program. Ivan earned his bachelor’s degree at Harvard and his MD at the New York University School of Medicine. He has held many prestigious positions, including vice president of editorial at Medscape, executive editor of Reuters Health, managing editor of the online edition of Scientific American, and deputy editor of The Scientist, to name a few.

Abstract: In 2000, there were about 40 retractions from the scholarly literature. In 2023, there were more than 10,000. That is a dramatic increase, even accounting for the growing number of papers published yearly. In this talk, I will explore the reasons for the increase, why it is good news, and why the actual number should be even higher. I will tell the stories of the sleuths who are finding problems in the literature, drawing on more than a decade of experience at Retraction Watch. And I will talk about how everyone can avoid ending up in the Retraction Watch Database -- or end up there for a good reason.
