Sammy holds a medical degree from the Hannover Medical School in Germany and heads a laboratory at the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne, having previously held positions at the Walter & Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, the National Institute of Neuroscience in Tokyo and the Hannover Medical School in Germany. Sammy’s research seeks to advance our understanding of how immune responses are initiated, tailored to the specific conditions associated with a given infections or disease, and eventually tuned down when the initial threat is overcome. While his work focusses on the fundamental underlying principles, ongoing efforts seek to apply these insights to the development of better therapies against infections and cancer. Specific areas of interest and expertise are: • DC function in infection and immunity • Molecular signal integration by DC and how these signals are decoded by T cells • Cell death regulation during infections by myeloid cells and T cells • Relationship between the microbiome, its metabolites and T cell immunity Sammy directs a joint PhD Program with the University of Bonn in Germany, from which >50 students have so far graduated with a jointly awarded PhD. Sammy is Head of Discovery Research at the Doherty Institute of Infection and Immunity and holds responsibility for international partnerships in the Cumming Global Centre for Pandemic Therapeutics.
