Rising Scholars Workshop

The Rockefeller University’s Rising Scholars Workshop aims to increase the diversity of graduate students and future faculty members by providing interactive scientific training, mentorship, and leadership development opportunities to promising young scientists from groups historically excluded from the life and biomedical sciences.

This three-day workshop provides participants with:

  • Introduction to experimental design through engaging plenary sessions and hands-on training in our cutting-edge resource centers
  • Opportunity to learn and practice skills necessary for success as a scientist, including evaluating scientific papers, experiment design, and scientific communication
  • Ability to build research-valued soft skills, such as strong communication, leadership, and teamwork
  • Interaction with Rockefeller University scientists, postdoctoral fellows, and students
  • Career explorations and opportunity to build meaningful professional relationships

Each scholar will receive:

    • All expenses paid (includes stipend for travel, lodging and meals) for the three-day on-campus experience, and a
    • $500 honorarium to support building scholars’ scientific network

Program Eligibility

The Rising Scholars Workshop will accept nominations from invited institutions for individuals of racial, ethnic, and/or disadvantaged backgrounds; individuals with disabilities; and other underrepresented groups in the life and biomedical sciences who are rising sophomores and juniors at their institutions.

The groups prioritized for this initiative are African Americans, Hispanic/Latinx Americans, Native Americans, Natives of Hawaii and other Pacific Islands, Natives of Alaska, people living with disabilities, or from other underrepresented/disadvantaged backgrounds.

Participants should be nominated based on their research experience and/or academic record, recommendations from faculty advisers or research supervisors, and commitment to a career in biomedical research.
