Policy for Use of the Typhoon Scanner
The Typhoon scanner is a Walk-up Instrument housed in the Proteomics Resource Center (PRC). While PRC staff can provide basic instruction in the use of the instrument (keycard access to the PRC, demonstrating most used scan modes and how to save data) the ultimate responsibility for the proper use rests with the individual investigator.
Because the scanner is used by the whole RU community, your consideration for the next user is paramount to the continuation of this service. Therefore:
-
- Do not conduct the exposure part of your experiment at the PRC but in the designated area of your lab where radioactive experiments are conducted. Bring exposed phosphor screens to the scanner in appropriate shielded Phosphor Storage Screens cassette. Phosphor Storage Screens are required to use the PhosphorImager and can be purchased through GE Healthcare (see details in scanner manual, section 4.3), for types of storage phosphor screens.
- Please clean the glass platen and the area around the instrument after you use the instrument. Purified water, Ethanol, Kim wipes, paper towels and gloves are available next to the scanner.
- Suggestions re. phosphor screens and storage:
-
- Always cover gels with plastic wrap to prevent direct contact between the screen and the gel. Wet gels can damage your screen.
- Wash gels completely free of acetic acid before drying; acid will damage the protective coating of your phosphor screen.
- Do not write with Sharpies or felt-tip pens on to the plastic wrap – the ink can run into the screen.
- Always store the phosphor screen in the exposure cassette. The cassette will help protect the screen.
