World-renowned neurobiologist Cori Bargmann explores the interdependent roles of genes, environment, and experience in building and organizing the brain through studies of the tiny roundworm C. elegans, which has only 302 neurons. This deceptively simple organism is shedding light on the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie all brain activity, including that of the complex human brain. Dr. Bargmann’s prominence in the scientific community led to her appointment as co-chair of the advisory group for the National Institutes of Health BRAIN Initiative in 2013. Three years later, she was appointed head of science for the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. She is a member of the National Academies of Sciences and Medicine and the recipient of many honors, including a Kavli Prize in Neuroscience and a Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences.
